Legend of the Marks
Every symbol on this line was struck into skin long before it was printed on cloth. These are the short tellings — what the mark meant, and what it asked of the one who carried it.
Turtle Shell
Honu — navigation and protection
The honu crosses thousands of miles of open ocean and still finds the beach it was born on. Its shell was struck on those who travelled far from home and were expected back. The plates are drawn joined, because shelter is something you carry rather than something you find.
Niho Mano
Shark teeth
The shark was not a monster to the old people. It was an 'aumakua — a guardian who took the shape of the reef's fastest hunter and swam ahead of the canoe. Its teeth were struck into the skin of those who stood between the family and open water, a row of them so the protection would never break. To wear niho mano was to accept that you move first and you do not turn back.

The front line
The spearhead belonged to those who stood at the edge of the village when the horizon went dark. It was worn where the wearer could not see it — across the back, over the hip — because the mark was never for the one carrying it. It told everyone behind them where the line was held.
Tiare Vine
The climbing flower
Tiare was strung for welcome, for birth and for burial, and the vine was struck on the body the way it grows: from the hip upward, following the bone. It was a woman's mark long before it was anyone's design, worn by those who carried the beauty of a people through hard seasons without letting it drop.
Spearhead Lotus
Defence that flowers
A rarer panel, granted to those who had already proven the spearhead. The bloom set inside the point marked a warrior who had come home and turned that same force toward growing something — a household, a crew, a generation of younger hands. Strength that stops being only a weapon.
Hibiscus Koru
The unfurling frond
The koru is a fern before it opens — the shape of something still becoming. Paired with hibiscus, it was placed over the ribs, where breath moves, and given to the young or the newly returned. It says the story is not finished with you yet.

The navigator's band
Vertical bands down the arm and side were the wayfinder's marks, read against the horizon and the rising stars the way a chart is read. Navigators earned one band per crossing. The unbroken run from shoulder to hem meant the voyage was made without losing the line.
Spine Chevron
The stacked line of lineage
Struck down the centre of the back, one chevron laid over the last, the spine mark counted the generations standing behind the wearer. Each stroke was a name. The artist worked from the nape downward so the oldest ancestors sat closest to the head, and the living carried the weight of all of them upright.
Side Panel Tatau
The full-length telling
Where a band records a crossing, the side panel records a life. Struck from ribs to knee across many sittings, it was the longest work an artist would undertake, and it was never begun on someone whose story was not yet worth the pain of it.

Shark teeth over the stacked line
Teeth and chevrons were struck together down the flank of those who ran the outer edge of a formation. The teeth face forward for the hunt; the chevrons stack behind them for the ones who follow. Worn low on the side, the pair marked a body built to turn quickly and hold the line while it turned.

Shark teeth closing into the unfurling frond
A hunting mark that ends in something still growing. The tooth rows run the length of the thigh and resolve into a koru at the hem, so the force of the mark is not left open — it curls back into the body. It was given to young athletes of the village: sharpened, but not finished.

Here the koru leads and the teeth defend it. Struck across the hip and thigh, it belonged to those carrying something new — a first season, a first child, a first crossing — with the guardian's row set on the outside of the curl so nothing could reach it.

The oral tradition held that the line would return. The niho mano is printed tone-on-tone across this jersey — a mark that only surfaces when the light moves across it, the way a prophecy surfaces only when it is time.
